Frozen Shoulder Explained

Understanding Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is a condition that leads to pain and stiffness in the shoulder. Over time, the shoulder becomes very hard to move. It occurs when the strong connective tissue surrounding the shoulder joint (the capsule) becomes thick, tight, and inflamed.

Symptoms of Frozen Shoulder

Symptoms develop gradually and are divided into three stages:

  • Freezing Stage: Pain gradually increases, making shoulder movement difficult, and range of motion starts to decrease.
  • Frozen Stage: Pain may begin to diminish during this stage, but the shoulder becomes stiffer, and using it becomes more difficult.
  • Thawing Stage: The range of motion in the shoulder begins to improve.

Causes and Risk Factors

While the exact cause of frozen shoulder is not fully understood, it is associated with dormancy or reduced mobility due to an injury, recent surgery, or other conditions. Risk factors include:

  • Age and gender: Most commonly occurs in people aged 40 to 60 and is more prevalent in women.
  • Medical conditions: Particularly those affecting connective tissue, such as diabetes and thyroid diseases.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Diagnosis of frozen shoulder involves a physical exam with attention to the arms and shoulders, the range of motion, and possibly imaging tests to rule out other causes of stiffness. Treatment typically includes:

  • Physical Therapy: To stretch the joint capsule and restore range of motion.
  • Medications: To reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Joint Injections: Corticosteroids or anesthesia to decrease pain and restore movement.
  • Surgery: Rarely required, but may involve stretching or releasing the joint capsule.

Prevention

Preventing frozen shoulder involves keeping the shoulder joint fully mobile, especially after injury or surgery, with regular, gentle exercises. Early intervention with physical therapy can prevent stiffness from worsening.
